The group became established until it developed a programme of activities to take place on a monthly basis throughout the year. Some years ago the group became more inclusive, sharing its activities with the men of St Mary’s church in Westwood and was appropriately renamed the St Mary’s and St Helen’s (SMASH) Men’s Group. A typical programme incorporates pub games evenings, snooker, tenpin bowling and a hot-pot supper during the winter months with cricket, golf, archery, model aeroplane flying, outdoor pub games, go-karts, cycle rides, walks and a barbeque in the summer. Cricket matches are also occasionally played against other churches, including Huthwaite, Nuthall and Greasley. The group also takes responsibility for organising the annual church Christmas Dinner to which, of course, families are invited. All men interested in joining the group and participating in the activities are very welcome, whether or not they are church members. Come along and join in!
