Good News

Good News is the meaning of the word ‘Gospel’, the word we use to describe the first four books in the New Testament of the Bible attributed to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  These books tell us of God’s purposes in sending Jesus Christ, his only Son, to be born into this world and to live and die as a man.

In brief, God not only created the world, but also created us in his own image.  When we strayed into sin because of the human natures that God gave us, his love for us meant he wanted to provide for us a way we could be redeemed.  His love for us was so great that he sent Jesus to be born into the world, not only to demonstrate that same love through his own life, but also through a cruel death nailed to a cross, by which the price was paid for all our sins.  During his life, Jesus showed us God’s love through many acts of compassion, forgiveness and healing but the great prize lies in his resurrection from the dead, through which he demonstrated his victory over both sin and death and sealed for us a promise of everlasting life.

The ‘good news’ thus lies in this promise of salvation and a life everlasting as part of God’s kingdom.  What is more, this is all a free gift from God – we cannot earn it, none of us are good enough, but we simply need to accept the gift by believing in and trusting in Jesus.  What is more, we do not need to wait until this life is over to reap the benefits – the Christian faith leads us into an altogether better and more fulfilling life in this world!
