Bell Ringing at St Helen's

We have a fine, easy going, ring of eight bells in the tower, the heaviest of which weighs 12.5 cwt (635 kg).  A summary of the bells can be found on the Tower page.

The ringers normally practice on Tuesday evenings starting at around 8 p.m.; visitors very welcome but please check with contact below for latest practice times.  Visiting bands very welcome by arrangement.  The bells may be booked for weddings and can regularly be heard ringing on Saturdays during the summer season.

Members of the St Helen's band belong both to the Southwell & Nottingham Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers and to the East Derbyshire and West Notts Association (EDWNA).  St Helen's hosts ringing meetings for these organisations and also participates in Quarter Peal days and other events.

Ray Tew has taken over as Tower Captain from July 2008 following the ordination of Adrian Dempster.  Following a curacy at the neighbouring church of  St Wilfred's, Kirkby-in-Ashfield and a time as Associate Priest in the parish of Skegby with Teversal, Adrian has now returned to Selston with Westwood as Associate Priest to work with the vicar, Revd Canon Fiona Shouler.

Anyone interested in joining the band will be sure of a warm welcome and should, in the first instance, contact Ray via the Contact Page.  Beginners very welcome!  The band is always seeking to recruit new ringers and would welcome anyone interested in finding out more.  Bell Ringing is a good activity for parents and children to learn together!
